Overview
The Crozer Keystone's Podiatric Residency Program is a premier 3 year, PMSR-RRA approved, foot and ankle surgical residency program. We are a three hospital system serving Delaware County, just south of Philadelphia (see locations). Our program provides residents with a broad spectrum of clinical and didactic experiences, which prepare them to practice exceptional podiatric medicine in today's dynamic health-care environment. Through our three-year Podiatric Residency Program, podiatric specialists develop into versatile, highly skilled surgeons with a commitment to compassionate patient care.
Academic Meetings
Meetings are held at Crozer Chester Medical Center Sim Lab at 17:00 each Wednesday, unless otherwise noted. Please contact a resident prior to coming to confirm time and place in case last minute changes have been made
Visitation
- We welcome student visitations whether it be for the day or to our weekly academic meetings.
- To schedule a visit, please use the email link above to contact the resident who arranges meetings. Once the day is set, you will be notified the night before through our surgery schedule and directly contacted by the resident you are assigned to regarding where to meet and at what time.
- The Friday before the following week is when the surgery schedule for that week is tentatively planned, so contacting on a Friday or Saturday is best to start making arrangements for that week.

- 1st Year = Podiatry Surgery (7 months); Vascular Surgery (1 month); Family Practice (1 month); Infectious Disease/Anesthesia (1 month); Emergency Department (1 month); Pathology/Radiology (1 month)
- 2nd Year = Podiatry Surgery (8 months); Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics (2 months); Psychology (2 Weeks); Orthopedics (2 Weeks); Elective (1 month)
- 3rd Year = Podiatry Surgery (8 months); Pain Management (2 Weeks); Office (1 month); Research (1 month); Elective (1 month); Sports Medicine (2 Weeks)
Details Regarding Rotations
Podiatric Surgery
Primarily involves management of inpatients and scrubbing of non-elective and elective foot and ankle surgeries with primarily podiatric, orthopedic, and vascular attendings. Depending on attendings there may or may not be scheduled rounds. There are 6-7 residents on service at a time (one each PGY-1, 2, and 3, and possibly an additional floating PGY-3). Divided into two geographic divisions (“POD 1 and POD 2”). Cases are determined by rank (usually, PGY-1 handles limb salvage, minor skin procedures, laser procedures, minor trauma; PGY-2 forefoot elective and trauma cases, PGY-3 rearfoot elective and trauma cases. PGY-2 and 3s also spend two ½ days in clinic each week. Residents are expected to be independent and diligent, but also work as a team, collaborate with other services
General Surgery
Work as an intern at Crozer's Level 2 trauma center, with interns from General Surgery. Morning rounds, following up on studies, complete consults, respond to trauma activations, help with floor procedures (e.g. vascular access). Shifts are 12 hours, and can be day or night. You are treated as any other MD/DO intern. You may also cover the trauma service and vascular surgery service depending on shift. Learn basics of managing various abdominal ailments.
Family Practice
Work as an intern with CKHS Family Medicine program. Medically manage primary patients in an inpatient facility. You work with CKHS Family Medicine residents, and MD/DO Transitional Year residents. You are treated no differently than any other MD/DO intern. Learn basics of medical management.
Infectious Diseases
Work with the ID service performing new consults and following up on old ones. Exposure to all aspects of ID including working in the CKHS Burn Unit. Learn about various antibiotics and their usages.
Emergency Department
Consists of 14, 9 hour shifts with required overnight and weekend shifts, performed in the ED at Crozer Chester Medical Center, an urban level 2 trauma center with a level 1 Burn Center. Work up common medical issues, mental health issues, and also opportunity to perform a variety of procedures (closed reductions, laceration repair, I&Ds). Opportunity to perform dozens of history and physicals.
Vascular Surgery
One month with vascular surgeons and fellows. Most of the rotation is spent working with in-patients and scrubbing vascular cases.
Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics (RIAO)
1-2 months spent at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore working in the RIAO department with 5 orthopedic MD and 1 DPM surgeons along with their fellow residents (4 total). Time is spent with each doctor (variable amount) in the office/OR/floor work. Weekly and weekend call is required with fellow back-up. Each doctor has a specific interest and pathology (mainly lower extremity from the hip to foot) seen will be dictated by the service you are covering. Large pediatric population. Opportunity for exposure to clubfoot deformity with casting and surgical management. Large deformity population (congenital / post-traumatic / iatrogenic) with corresponding surgeries in extremity salvage with the goal of functionality. Housing and meals provided.
Anesthesia
2 week with anesthesia, practice intubation and learn about anesthesia techniques, medicine, and workup.
Pathology
2 week rotating through the various pathology labs (chemistry, hematology/transfusion medicine, gross, cytology)
Radiology
2 weeks rotating through radiology department, including time with IR (vascular interventionalist), ultrasound, and reading rooms for a variety of studies.
Behavioral Science/Psychology
Complete consults and follow ups for inpatient psychiatric service, evaluate patients in the psychiatric crisis center. Learn about capacity evaluations, management of overdoses and drug addiction, treatment of various psychiatric issues, involuntary commitment, and evaluation of burn and trauma patients.
Orthopedics
Shadow one of our foot and ankle orthopedic surgeons and evaluate general orthopedic complaints for patients in a variety of outpatient settings, scrub a variety of general orthopedic cases. Includes evaluation of new and recurring patients for ailments such as osteoarthritis of various joints, nerve entrapments, etc. Office and OR hours make up the bulk of the rotation.
Sports Medicine
Learn conservative managements for orthopedic complaints including various foot and ankle pathologies, exposure to ultrasound guided treatments.
Research
Time to work on research projects. All residents are expected to present their research, and are encouraged to submit projects to journals and conferences. CKHS will reimburse up to $1500 for travel and fees related to presentation of research at conferences each year. Please see our “Research” page for current projects.
Elective
These allow the resident to set a portion of their curriculum. Extra time can be spent on rotations already completed, or on other rotations such as plastic surgery, wound care office, outpatient podiatry, orthopedics, or plastic surgery (outpatient > inpatient/OR).
